Reminder: NY State Math Exams Begin May 6

It’s time for the Math to “start math-ing.”

Beginning Tuesday, May 6, through Friday, May 16, elementary and middle school students in grades 3–8 across New York State will take New York State’s annual Mathematics test(Open external link). The State Math test is two-day, untimed exam containing several different kinds of questions, including multiple-choice and open-ended questions, that can help teachers and schools understand and assess their students’ grade level understanding of mathematics.

City schools will be able to administer the 2025 Math exam to their students on any school days within the May 6–May 16 testing window—we strongly recommend that you check with your child’s school to confirm exactly when your child is scheduled to take their Math test this spring.

This year, students in grades 4, 5, 6, and 8 will be required to take the State Math test on a computer. For grades 3 and 7, schools have the option to give these students the State test on either a computer or on paper.

To learn more about the 2025 State Math exam, visit our official “NY State Mathematics Test” webpage(Open external link), and consider having your child review our official Question Sampler(Open external link), where students can check out sample State Math exams and familiarize themselves with the exam’s testing format. We also suggest you speak with your child’s teachers regarding any concerns you may have about this year’s exam.

On behalf of NYC Public Schools, we wish all of our students success on this year’s State Math exams!
