As a child growing up outside of Cleveland, Ohio, Gary Beidleman often felt like it wasn’t safe to be smart, and in some spaces, it wasn’t safe to be Black. An educator who saw an injustice changed his trajectory. Today, as Superintendent of Manhattan High Schools in New York City, Gary is working toward a future where learners are self-directed, critical thinkers empowered to solve real-world challenges. He offers his Brief But Spectacular take on leading—while being unapologetically himself. — LeveragED Foundation is an operating foundation that invests in the success of high-impact, service-oriented education leaders because we believe that they can accelerate the growth of thriving school systems that transform entire communities.
In partnership with Brief But Spectacular, an Emmy-nominated interview series that airs weekly on PBS NewsHour, these short-form episodes present an in-depth look at a variety of compelling educators and ideas.
